Just out of curiosity, what kind of carseats do you ladies have and do you have it already installed in your car?  I purchased the Peg Perego Primo Viaggo 30/30 in Geranium.  I just read reviews and decided that was "the one", but I don't know of anyone who actually has one.

 

Also, do you bring the carseat in the hospital with you or do you leave it in the car and just strap baby in? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I've seen ppl carry their carseat in the wheelchair with baby secured in.

Our infant seat is the Britax B-Safe. The bases are installed in our cars but the seat itself is in our living room - I hope we don't forget it on our way to the hospital!

I actually don't know whether we bring the carseat into the hospital or not.  Good question. I'm going to ask at my next appointment.

we are using the Graco safeseat 30 we used with DS. DH still hasn't installed the base in the car but he put it in and took it out so many times with DS that he'll put it in when we go to the hospital or when he comes home to see DS while I'm still at the hospital.

With DS they made us bring the infant carrier into my hospital room and the nurse had to check it, then make sure that the baby was strapped in okay, she walked us out with the baby in the seat and had to watch us put him in the car. It must have to do with liability/insurance on the hospitals end.

You won't regret your purchase. We have the same seat and love it! It just seems so much more stable than all the others we tested out. 

Not sure if all hospitals are the same but we have to bring the seat in so the nurses can make sure baby is strapped in properly. Their policy is that they don't let you leave unless you have a safe and certified carseat.

Ooo! Thanks for letting me know that you have it and love it. Don't judge me, but mine gets here tomorrow evening. *sigh* Horrible, I know, I know!!!

Also, PPs thanks for telling me I have to bring the car seat inside with me. Clearly, I'm a FTM who is absolutely clueless!

We have a different car seat- a Baby Trend. It is not installed, but will be very soon. We did take the seat in to the hospital when it was time to bring DS home. They are much easier to get buckled in when the seat is not in the car, and they are easier to bundle for cold weather. As long as you have a seat that snaps into a base, that's the way I would recommend doing it.

How long do the infant car seats usually last? I know it says 30 lbs. and 30 inches, but when does it really become uncomfortable for baby?

I know you and I don't have the same seat but our Graco is for babies up to 30 pounds and my DS is almost 2 and only weighs about 25 pounds, but he was out of the infant seat at about 7-8 months I think? He became too long for it and it was becoming waaay too heavy to carry him around in, and it was a pain getting him in and out of the seat from the car so we got rear facing convertible seats. It will all depend on how your baby is proportioned. DS was long and skinny, but some babies are short and wider. Also I can't imagine putting a 30 lb. baby in an infant seat but if they're advertising that I guess it has to be possible.

See?! This is why I love this site - I'm so absolutely clueless.  So, I guess I can expect to maybe sell that thing on ebay in about 8 months, haha!

Again, we have a different seat, but the weight limits are similar in all of them. Most LOs don't stay in the seat up to the limit. DS was out of his infant seat at 5mo. He was probably still a full 10lbs under the weight limit, but the straps were tight on him and he was too heavy to carry around in it anymore. He could sit up on his own, and it was easier to buckle him in and out of the convertable seat at that point.

You know what? I just looked up "Peg Perego Convertible Car seat" and they have an infant-to-toddler. Had I known that existed, I would have gotten that one instead. I didn't know what a convertible seat was...LOL, smh.

We've got the Chicco Keyfit 30, but I have heard good things about the Peg Perego seats! We do not have the car seat bases installed yet- it's on the schedule for the 10th. (Talk about pushing it, I guess!)

And I believe for our hospital, it's the same as PPs- you bring in the car seat when you're ready to leave and they check everything over.

We too have the Chicco keyfit 30 in Limonata.

Bases are installed in both vehicles and car seat is in my husbands truck...ready to go . At our hospital you are required to bring the car seat in and must be checked before leaving.

We have the Chicco Keyfit 30.  Ours is not installed because my husband is a child passenger safety seat tech instructor... he can do it in a minute- so before we leave he will put it in.

As for bringing it in, most hospitals want to make sure you have the baby in the seat correctly before letting you leave, so yes, you bring in the seat, and strap in the baby inside the hospital.  Plus, if you need help, you don't want to be stuck outside with no one around, potentially in the cold.

As for when you can get rid of the infant seat, it all depends on your kid and your preference.   My son was 18lbs at 4 months and was so chunky that he was squished in the infant seat, and I could no longer pick it up, so we moved to a convertible seat.  He had never once pooped, spilled, or spit up in that seat, and we did not use it as part of a travel system, so it was in pristine condition.  Literally, it looks absolutely brand new.  I washed the cover according to the manual and it looks like it just came out of a box. If you plan to have another child within the expiration date of the seat, hang on to it.

We have the Graco snugride 30, but we haven't even unpacked it yet. Hopefully that will be a project for the weekend.

Our hospital makes you bring the carseat into the hospital before they'll discharge baby. Plus the nurse in our class said since we're having a Jan baby its good to bring it in to warm up before putting LO into it.

We have a Graco Safeseat that we had last time. It's installed in our car as of last weekend, just in case. We left it in the car until we were ready to go home. It's pretty standard that they won't discharge the baby unless they know there's a carseat. (I know that's the law here in NJ, anyway.)  If it's an infant seat, you'll likely strap the baby in before leaving your room. If you have a convertible carseat that used for infants, too, I suppose someone goes to your car with you since they often escort you out anyway.

We also have the Peg Perego Via whatever infant seat.  I bought it second hand, figuring that LO would only be in it a few months and that I could save some cash on it.  Then I found out that I really wasn't happy with the way it fit into the Snap n Go stroller - it seemed really precarious. 

So last week we went out and bought a new PP Pliko P3 stroller, which I kind of love - light weight, one touch folding, sturdy, compact, easy to get in and out of the trunk.  I'm really happy with it.  So my sweet deal on the infant seat led to a $260 stroller purchase.  So maybe it was not such a great deal. 

And then today a friend called and said she saw the PP strollers at our local Home Goods/TJ Maxx.  Uggh. And we already assembled ours and threw out the box.  So much for being proactive and prepared.  I think I'll keep this little bit of news to myself - some things DH just doesn't need to know.

Ouch.  I guess I don't feel so bad that I'm going to have to buy a new car seat in a few months.  I saw that the Peg Perego car seats are compatible with the Stokke stroller that I just HAVE to have.  I'm not telling my SO either. I'm just going to tell him I'm buying a $500 stroller (have him give me the money for it) and put in the other $500 myself. He'd probably half-way die if he knew I wanted a $1000 stroller (maybe I can find it somewhere cheaper before then, second hand).

*sigh* Babies are so expensive - haha!
